A Stanford + Consumer Reports Initiative for Creating a Secure, Consumer-Centric, Trusted Marketplace of AI Agents
Stanford's Digital Economy Lab and Consumer Reports Innovation Lab (CR) are joining forces to create a forward-looking research initiative to develop, test and deploy agentic AI frameworks with consumer-centric values. By bringing together a community of technologists, researchers, and consumer advocates across industry, academia, and civil society, this initiative will tackle the complex challenge of ensuring that AI agents act securely, transparently, and in the user's best interests. The Initiative will focus on, developing sandboxes for prototyping next-generation patterns, learning from applied research and ultimately demonstrating a more dynamic, competitive marketplace driven by "loyal by design" AI.
This effort is led by leading experts in technology, consumer advocacy, and digital economy, and partnered with leading organizations and collaborators in creating a safer future.
Our research and development efforts are contributing to the advancement of loyal AI agents through academic publications and open-source contributions.
More publications and open-source projects coming soon as our initiative progresses.
Collaborating on the future of identity for agents - establishing secure, verifiable, and interoperable identity standards for AI systems.
Developing standardized credentials and identification systems for using agents safely in consumer and enterprise environments.
Addressing the complex challenges of aligning multiple AI agents and establishing governance frameworks for agent-to-agent interactions.
Research into ensuring AI agents accurately understand, maintain, and act upon user preferences with high fidelity across different contexts and interactions.
Developing improved techniques for AI agents to manage, organize, and utilize memory effectively while maintaining privacy and security.
Investigating the legal frameworks, liability structures, and safety standards necessary for responsible deployment of AI agents in consumer markets.
